“There’s this thing they have in French: l’esprit d’escalier. The spirit of the stairway. I don’t think we have a word for it in English … It means, well, the clever things to say that you only think to yourself when you’re on your way out … All the cool stuff you wish you’d said at the time.”
Death: The Time of Your Life
Neil Gaimen
So …
I work in a field where people actually have the job title ‘creative’. How insecure do you have to be to put an adjective as your job title? Isn’t creativity something you have to demonstrate rather than just endow yourself with? You don’t see university professors going around calling themselves ‘Brainies’ do you? Or assassins rebranded as ‘Deadlies’? It’s ridiculous.
I love really creative people, we’ve all met them, the ones that never really grow up, never stop learning, that have new ideas, crazy new plans bursting out of them on a daily basis. That’s how I want to live my life to and it’s my hope that this website will be a sort of hub for all the crazy plans I’ve yet to make. I want to make films, write novels, review stuff I love or hate, make podcasts, publicise shows, tell stories, write jokes, take pictures. I want a place to put all that so anyone interested can see it.
That’s what I want Spirit of the Stairwell to be – all the cool stuff I actually got round to.
Hope you enjoy it.
